In March, QSec were approached by Mark Brotherton Limited, an architect based in West Yorkshire to come up with a security solution for his client, Trinity House Dental Practice in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Mark very kindly agreed to give us a customer testimonial around 6 weeks ago and we are now pleased to add photographs and a description of the roller shutter installation that was carried out.

Roller Shutter Installation

Roller Shutter installation at Trinity House Dentral Surgery

The brief was to protect the extremely vulnerable large glass area at the front of a Dental Practice called Trinity House in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. QSec recommended that the best solution would be to use a solid lath electrically operated roller shutter powder coated the same colour as the rest of the building. This would be a very large roller shutter at almost six metres square.

specialist installation equipment for roller shutter

The site was within a busy pedestrian area; therefore every precaution was taken to protect the public and our installation team. Due to the size of the opening and the weight of the roller shutter specialist lifting equipment was required. This made the installation much safer and reduced the amount of time QSec needed to be on site. Here we are manoeuvring the scissor lift into place.

Roller shutter being lifted into place

When the barrel of the roller shutter (which is the heaviest part as it houses the electric motor) was loaded onto the scissor lift it needed to be aligned with the roller shutter guide rails. Once this was achieved the scissor lift is then levelled and made steady using the hydraulic feet. The barrel is now ready to be lifted the six plus metres into the air ready for the next stage.

Roller shutter guided into place

The barrel is now six metres in the air and is lined up with the end plates which are located at the top of the guide rails. The end plates hold the barrel in place and allow it to rotate.

Roller shutter fastened securely

The barrel is located into the end plates and securely fastened using large bolts. The photograph shows us just finishing this part of the installation.

Attaching the roller shutter curtain

The next job is to attach the roller shutter curtain to the barrel (as seen here). At this point it is important that the curtain is also located into the guide rails. These hold the curtain in place when it is being operated. You can see in the photograph that the curtain is lined up and is starting to descend.

Testing the newly installed roller shutter

With the curtain attached to the barrel and located within the guide rails it can now be tested. Here we are lowering the curtain to check it is operating smoothly.

Roller shutter key switches

A key switch is used to operate the shutter. Two are shown here as one operates the external shutter and the other operates a previously installed internal roller shutter. Key switches offer a safe and secure way of operating roller shutters. They are anti-tamper and can be surface mounted or recessed into the wall.
